Fair and equitable treatment is already addressed in current existing law. This bill would further complicate social issues that are better addressed in professional development of teachers and staff members.
There is an existing national program for professional development regarding bullying and harassment currently provided for teachers across the nation.
This bill excludes input of broad-spectrum views of society by specifying special status to a targeted group. It does not allow for discussion points in favor and in opposition. It follows a pattern of indoctrination comparative to religious issues.
Existing laws provide that no person shall be subjected to discrimination on the basis of sex, ethnic group, identification, race, national origin, religion, color, mental or physical disability, or any actual or perceived characteristic that is contained in the definition of hate crimes described in Penal code 422.56 in any program or activity conducted by an educational institution that receives or benefits from state financial assistance or student financial aid. [Ed. Code 220.]
In conclusion, this bill could lead to the requirement of labeling public figures of society by their gender identification when printed in state textbooks. This could lead to a polarization of societal viewpoints and beliefs, causing a rift among community members and possible exodus of public schools. Let’s use current existing programs and laws to work together toward inclusion.
